Can you buy Propecia over the counter in the US?

No. Propecia is not an over-the-counter product in the United States. Finasteride 1 mg stays behind a prescription because the label writes a men's hair indication, a pregnancy contraindication, and a crushed-tablet handling stop. A minoxidil foam in the hair aisle does not open the oral tablet. Finpecia 1 mg on a foreign carton does not create a US OTC exception. A shop that skips the written line is a BeSafeRx problem, not an aisle.

01Can a Finpecia 1 mg blister skip the written line?

Forest-green still life: locked hair-care drawer, tablet behind glass

Not for a US fill. Export packaging does not rewrite US prescription status. A site that says 'no Rx needed' is advertising a gap, not a labelled exception.

If the carton even fails to print finasteride 1 mg, walk away. The ingredient note is the short INN check.

02Does topical minoxidil change the Rx rule?

Some minoxidil liquids and foams are sold without a prescription. That is a different product and a different route. It does not convert oral finasteride 1 mg into an aisle tablet.

Clinics often pair the two. The pair does not move 1 mg to OTC status. See the 1 mg vault for the oral line.

03What about a personal import of 1 mg?

Personal-import stories are not this page's labelled course. A US pharmacy still needs a prescription to fill finasteride 1 mg. This site will not map a customs loophole.

Broken or unlabeled strips also fail the handling rule for anyone who may be pregnant. Whole coated tablets are the form the label describes.

04Who still has to mention pregnancy handling?

The prescriber and the pharmacist. Women who are or may be pregnant should not handle crushed or broken 1 mg tablets. That sentence does not wait for an OTC switch that has not happened.

Keep the bottle closed. The coat protects during ordinary handling only while the tablet stays whole.

05Why 1 mg stays behind the pharmacy counter

The US label writes finasteride 1 mg for men with male pattern hair loss and lists pregnancy as a contraindication. Those are prescription facts. A clerk cannot skip them by placing the bottle next to shampoo.

Hypersensitivity to any component is the other labelled stop. That counselling sits with a prescriber and a pharmacist, not with a shelf tag.

06How an OTC claim should send you to BeSafeRx

A shop that sells finasteride 1 mg 'without a script' is the opposite of a licensed US pharmacy. Run the BeSafeRx checks before you send a card number.

Require a prescription, a US license, a real address and phone, and a pharmacist who will answer. Missing any one is enough to close the tab.

Answers follow the U.S. Propecia label.

Hassan R. I can buy minoxidil at the drugstore. Why not Propecia?

Vault reply

Minoxidil on that aisle is a different product. Finasteride 1 mg is prescription-only in the United States. The oral tablet keeps the pregnancy-handling and PSA counselling.

Elise D. A kiosk in another country sold Finpecia 1 mg. Can I refill that here OTC?

Vault reply

No. A US pharmacy will not treat an export carton as an OTC refill. Bring a US prescription for finasteride 1 mg if the indication still fits.

Marco F. Is there an FDA OTC monograph for 1 mg finasteride?

Vault reply

The US Propecia label is a prescription label. This page will not invent an OTC switch. If a site claims one, treat that as a BeSafeRx problem.

Before you start, stop, or change any medicine, speak with your prescriber or pharmacist - they hold your chart, this vault card does not. Open the vault disclaimer.
