Is there a generic for Flagyl 250 mg?

Yes. Generic Flagyl is metronidazole. The US oral tablets on the Flagyl insert are 250 mg and 500 mg. This vault follows the 250 mg tablet. A generic bottle may look different from brand Flagyl (round, blue, SEARLE 1831 / FLAGYL 250). The ingredient line does not change because the imprint does. Read the metronidazole vault for the course rules that travel with either carton.

01Which tablet strengths the insert lists

Forest-green still life: two cartons pointing to one white tablet

Flagyl tablets contain 250 mg or 500 mg of metronidazole. Those are the two oral strengths in HOW SUPPLIED. Other forms (gel, infusion) are not this swallow.

Peak plasma after 250 mg, 500 mg, or 2,000 mg oral doses has been measured near 6, 12, and 40 mcg/mL. The milligram on the tablet sets that peak. It does not invent a third oral strength.

02What a cheaper carton cannot change

It cannot turn Flagyl into an OTC tablet. It cannot drop the three-day alcohol wait. It cannot treat a viral cold. The boxed line still wants the drug reserved for the labelled infections.

If the insert in the box disagrees with a blog dose, keep the insert and call the writer. This site does not fill the bottle.

03When the bottle is 500 mg instead

A 500 mg tablet is still metronidazole. It is not a 'stronger Flagyl brand'. Directions must be rewritten if the prescriber wanted 250 mg three times daily and the window hands you 500 mg.

Bacterial vaginosis packs in many clinics use 500 mg twice daily. That plan is not a reason to split a 500 mg tablet into a homemade 250 mg course. Get the strength that was written.

04Which warnings travel with the generic

Disulfiram in the prior two weeks stays closed. Cockayne syndrome stays closed. Warfarin still needs prothrombin time and INR watched. First-trimester trichomoniasis stays closed on the Flagyl insert.

Metallic taste is listed for metronidazole, not only for the brand name. The short mouth page is the taste pulse.

05Why a different stamp is still metronidazole

Brand Flagyl 250 mg is debossed SEARLE 1831 on one side and FLAGYL 250 on the other. Generic 250 mg tablets use other codes (examples on DailyMed include PLIVA 333 and HP64). Those are manufacturer marks, not new molecules.

If the vial says metronidazole 250 mg and the count matches the script, you have the generic for Flagyl 250 mg. A photo of a blue tablet on a forum is not an identity check. Reading the brand tablet stays on the Pfizer description.

06What name sits under Flagyl

Flagyl is the brand. Metronidazole is the synthetic nitroimidazole on the insert. Pharmacies fill generic metronidazole when brand oral Flagyl is not on the shelf. Ask for the INN if the bag only shows a house brand.

Same 250 mg tablet still needs the alcohol hold and the disulfiram two-week gap. A generic label does not shorten those clocks. The US order probe covers how the line is written.

Vault consult

Answers follow the U.S. Flagyl label.

Elena F. Is generic metronidazole 250 mg a different drug from Flagyl?

Vault reply

No. Metronidazole is the ingredient. Flagyl is the brand name on the Pfizer tablet description.

Pau S. My pills are white, not blue. Wrong drug?

Vault reply

Brand Flagyl 250 mg is blue and film coated. Many generic 250 mg tablets are white. Check that the vial says metronidazole 250 mg.

Gisela T. Can I ask the window for 500 mg generic if 250 mg is back-ordered?

Vault reply

Only if the prescriber rewrites the directions. A 500 mg tablet is a different strength, not a substitute you invent at the counter.

Before you start, stop, or change any medicine, speak with your prescriber or pharmacist - they hold your chart, this vault card does not. Open the vault disclaimer.
